Match Report - Kent "A" v West Sussex "A" - Sat 18 Nov 06.

The Kent "A" Team win against rivals West Sussex

The Kent County "A" Team entertained West Sussex at Strood Leisure Centre on Saturday 18th November in a crucial round robin game. West Sussex have been a strong and competitive team over recent years, beating Kent twice last season. The Kent team were determined to do much better this year.

Kent got off to an excellent start Alan Faulkner, playing his first singles game in the "A" Team, trailed until the 13th end, when he picked up 2 shots to go ahead 11-10 and then finished strongly to win 16-10. Danny Cosgree also won 17-13. In the fours Derrick Groom’s team of Evelyn Nobbs, Colin Watson and Bryan Smith won convincingly 14-2. However, the other Kent four of Rita Horn, Keith Austin, Alan Stroud and Mick Spurgeon left it late to record their win. Trailing 3-7 after 7 ends they picked up 7shots on the last two ends to win 10-7.

West Sussex came back strongly in the second session, but Kent shared the points. These came through the triple of Dick Stagg, Sonia Watson and Keith Williams, squeezing home by one shot 10-9, with the other points coming through Sue Smith and Ray Anns in the pairs, with a 19-13 win.

At the half way stage Kent were 12pts to 4pts up with +17 shots.

The third session saw a reversal for Kent with both singles going down 8-15 and 11-14. However, both fours continued their good form and both won well. Mick Spurgeon's four wining 12-6 and Derrick Groom's four winning 9-5.

Going into the last session Kent remained 8pts up and +17shots.

West Sussex kept fighting to the end and won the fourth session 5pts-3pts. The points for Kent coming through the all Tunbury SMBC triple of Keith Corby, Frank Wiedeholz and Derek Carpenter, winning 10-6 and a draw for Sue Smith and Ray Anns, 10-10. The other Kent pair of Chris Groom and Chris Bull, playing together for the first time, were unlucky in going down 15-16 on the last end.

This was a good all round team performance with the fours continuing to provide the base on which the rest of the team could build. The final score was Kent "A" 23pts and West Sussex 13pts, with Kent +14 shots.

Kent "A" Team look forward to their next match away to East Sussex on the 2nd December.

Match Report - East Sussex "B" v Kent "B" - Sat 9 Dec 06

Kent went into this game determined not to lose. In the first session they won three out of the four mats and then went one better in the second session by winning all four mats.

I don’t know what they all had for lunch but in the third session they went to pieces and lost three out of the four mats. There was some consolation as Percy Boozer won his singles game 28 -5.

Session four showed a little improvement with Kent picking up 3 points out of the 8 points.

So the final score was East Sussex 13 points, 148 shots and Kent ‘B’ 23 points, 195 shots, with Kent getting the bonus points for aggregate shots.

Another win for Kent ‘B’ but I think I might have to stop the dinner break in future.

The second session did not make up for the poor start, in fact; Kent lost all four games and went into lunch 14pts to 2pts down. Kent needed to come out quickly and restore some pride.

The third session saw the points shared 4 each. The 4pts for Kent were won through the single of Tim Rycraft, winning 17-9 and the four of Irene Benton, Sonia Watson, Roy Palmer and Gary Allard winning 8-5.

Match Report - West Sussex v Kent "B" - Sat 10 Feb 07

Kent "B" retain the Challenge Shield for the 5th time in succession.

Every year Kent ‘B’ & West Sussex play for the Challenge Shield, one year it is in Kent, the following year in West Sussex. This Year it was West Sussex's turn to host the match. The match comprises of a team of 36 players on each side playing triples on 6 mats in four sessions.

Kent went down to Sussex with three players short but W. Sussex agreed that Kent could put in a scratch team to make up for the missing triple.

Kent have won the shield for the last 4 years and so West Sussex were determined to get their hands on it this year. They started the first session really well, after 4 ends W. Sussex were leading on 5 mats out of 6, with the triple on mat 5 leading 14-0. At the end of the 11 end matches Kent had won 3, drew 1 and W. Sussex had won 2 and drew 1.

The second session started as the first with W. Sussex going ahead on five mats up to the sixth end. The Kent triples then woke up and pulled their game together, but not enough to stop W. Sussex winning four mats out of six. On mat 1 the Kent triple went all out to win 25-7 and in doing so got not 1 but 2 hotshots.

And so at the half way stage W. Sussex had 13 points, 119 shots whilst Kent had 11 points, 118 shots. Everything stops for lunch.

In the third Session after eight ends W. Sussex were leading on five mats but the scores were very close. Disaster was looking Kent in the face. Then Kent pulled shots back and at the end of the session Kent won four out of six mats.

Kent were 2 points and 3 shots in front going into the last session and all to play fore. Again W. Sussex went in front on five mats and again Kent came back, but they could only win two mats. With W. Sussex winning three mats with one mat to finish Kent needed at least a draw to go home with the shield for the fifth year running. After the 10th end W. Sussex took a three shot lead. In the last end Kent held 3 shots and the W. Sussex skip knocks one of the counting shots away with his last wood. It is up to Kent to draw in with the last wood. The Kent skip bowls his wood it drifts past the head and stops just behind, but close enough to get Kent the draw they needed.

What a days bowling, with some great games played. The final score was W. Sussex 24pts, 237 shots; Kent 24pts, 243 shots plus four bonus points to Kent for shots aggregate.

Kent retain the Shield for the fifth year running but I am sure Kent will have to be at their best again next year when we meet West Sussex in Kent.

Thank you West Sussex for an enjoyable day and a hard fought battle.

Match Report - Kent "A" v West Sussex "A" - Sun 11 March 07

The Kent "A" Team Win Final against West Sussex

The Kent County "A" Team travelled to the Caroline Chisholm School in Northampton on 11th March 2007 to play the final of the Inter County Championship determined to retain the trophy they won last year.

Kent and West Sussex were in the same Round Robin group section and had played each other earlier this year. Both teams won their respective home games by 23pts to 13pts and now it was down to who could do the business on a neutral venue.

The first session started promptly with Cliff Lorkins (Hornhill SMBC) taking the lead singles game. After seven ends, with the opposition putting up stiff resistance, the score was 5-6. Cliff then won the next five ends, after killing the eighth end, to lead 14-6 and eventually finished up a worthy winner 20-8. Meanwhile Alan Faulkner (Newington SMBC) played a splendid game picking up three "full houses" to run out a clear winner 23-6. In the fours Keith Williams (Ryarsh SMBC), Colin Watson (Burham SMBC) Bryan Smith (Shorne SMBC) and Derrick Groom (St Mary’s Platt SMBC) were unable to hold a rampant West Sussex side and lost 1-15. However the other four of Rita Horn (Culverstone SMBC), who was in great form, Keith Austin (Hamstreet SMBC), Alan Stroud (Downswood SMBC) and Mick Spurgeon (Hamstreet SMBC) ran out convincing winners 19-5.

It was now the turn of the triples and pairs to build on the good start. Chris Bull (Hawkinge SMBC) and John Rycraft (Wye SMBC) were held until the 10th end when they pulled away to win 16-9. Things were not looking good for the second pair of Sue Smith (Tunbury SMBC) and Ray Anns (Borden SMBC), being 7-10 down with three ends to play. However, they went into the last end all square and managed to pick up the important shot to win 11-10. In the triples Chris Groom (St Mary’s Platt SMBC), Frank Wiedeholz and Derek Carpenter (Tunbury SMBC) were also in a tight fought game going into the last end 8-8. Sadly for them the deciding shot went to West Sussex. The second triple of Keith Corby (Tunbury SMBC), Dick Stagg (Wye SMBC), and Sonia Watson (Burham SMBC) played a controlled game and won positively 15-7.

At the half way stage Kent led by 12pts to 4pts with +44 shots.

Despite a change made by West Sussex to one of their singles players Cliff Lorkins held his nerve to win 14-11 and Alan Faulkner also won by 12-10.
