This years under 18’s Woodbridge Trophy competition was held at Brackley Indoor Bowls Club in Northampton on Sunday 7 May 2006. 22 teams from 12 Counties participated for first and second place, which, for the last few years has continuously been won by Essex.
The first session got of to a bad start with only one of three Kent teams, Kent 2, winning which was the same for the second session. The third session saw Kent 2 winning a huge 15 – 2, to make it three wins in a row. Kent 3 also picked up a well deserved win against West Sussex 2 to get on the right track. Kent 1 were still unable to take a victory losing yet again, heavily to West Sussex 1.
The forth session yet again saw the Kent 2 pick up another big win to put them in the top 5 and looking for certain success. Kent 3 only managed a draw and Kent 1 still stuck in the starting blocks with zero points.
The fifth and final session was drawing close with Kent 2 losing 4 – 7 going into the last end and needing to win to be sure of victory and bringing the trophy home to Kent. Unfortunately they were unable to muster any more shots, dropping another and losing 8 – 4 overall. This was there first defeat of the day and it put them out the running for either first or second shout. Kent 3 managed to grab another good victory with Kent 1 snatching there first win of the day, winning narrowly 11 – 10, having dropped 7 on the last end!!!
The overall winners of the day were 4 young lads from Warwickshire with East Sussex coming in 2nd place, Cambridgeshire in 3rd and Kent 2 in 4th place.
All the players, parents and the Kent youth management team had a good day. The whole team eagerly awaits the nice summer break to fully recharge for another exciting season of bowling ahead.

Match Report - England
U18's v Hampshire
|
|
On the 26th March 2006, four Kent County Juniors had call ups for the England under 18 Squad to play in a match against Hampshire in Southampton. The four played as a rink with Michael Best as skip, Wayne Wellard at three, Melissa Cooper at two and Debbie Tomlinson leading.
The rink lost their first game 10-9 after coming back from 7-0 down and won there second by a massive 15-7. The England juniors beat Hampshire overall on the day. Promising feedback was received from the England Youth Manager and this will hopefully lead to many more call-ups for the Kent four. So watch this space.....
Kent Juniors in Burwash
Under 18's Singles Success
On Sunday 26th November Christopher Philpott and
Christopher Wood entered the Burwash under 18's Open singles competition. This
competition is played on a Round Robin League basis with 5 qualifying games,
with the winner of the group going through to play in the Knock Out stages.
|
|
Unfortunately for Kent the two Chris’s were drawn in the same group and would have to play against each other at some stage through the day.
Both opening games for the Kent duo started with losses, Chris Philpott losing 3-8 and Christopher Wood losing 3-9, but, following the early game nerves, both boys won their next three games well. This left both boys on 6 points with only one qualifying game to play, the winner of which would go through to the semi-final. The battle of the Chris’s took place with both boys playing exceptionally well, but with only one to go through, Chris Philpott went on to win the game 10 -4.
In the semi-final Chris Philpott's opponent was last year's competition winner. Chris played a solid game and came out a 6 – 3 winner, earning a place in the Final.
The final saw Chris Philpott, face a very good, older opponent from Plumpton SMBC. Despite Chris’s valiant effort he lost 2 -9.
Well done to both boys, who played some excellent bowls, and well done to the Burwash Open Runner–Up Christopher Philpott.

In the replayed end the Burham four picked up one shot to win the game 11-9.
The second semi-final was between Chris England, Danny Cosgree, Bob Smith and Tim Rycraft playing the Hawkinge SMBC four of Jody Frampton, Gary Allard, Gary Best and Ted Messer. In another tight game the Hawkinge four were 4-6 down after 5 ends, but had pulled back to 7-7 after 8 ends. In the final end one shot for the Hawkinge four carried them through to the final.
The final also produced a close match. The Hawkinge four went into a 4-0 lead after 2 ends but after the fifth end the Burham four had pulled them back to lead 5 shots - 4. After 7 ends the score was 7-7 and a replayed eighth end, following a jack of the mat, found the Burham four with a three shot lead at 9-6. The Hawkinge four were able to regain that loss during the final end to tie the 9 ends at 9 shots each. With the extra end being played the Hawkinge lead put the jack into the ditch, but his toucher ended up on the opposite side of the ditch. Following a tense end of drawing to the ditch line the Burham four came out winners with two shots to win 11-9.
