Match Report – Kent “A” v West Sussex “A” – 13 Oct 07

At Strood Leisure Centre the Kent “A” team entertained a West Sussex team determined to upset Kent’s progress in the Inter County Championship. This was always going to be a needle match and so it turned out to be.

Kent got of to a slow start, only winning one of the first four games. The win was achieved by Mick Spurgeon’s team of Rita Horn, Keith Austen and Allan Stroud, winning comfortably 22-5. The other four of Dick Stagg, Colin Watson, Danny Cosgree and Derrick Groom went down 7-18. In a rare lapse both singles, Cliff Lorkins and Alan Faulkner, lost 12-20 and 7-18 respectively, leaving Kent2pts to 6 down and -13 shots.

The second session of pairs and triples saw Kent trying to recover the situation. Both pairs produced good wins, Sue Smith and Ray Anns by 18 shots to 8 and Alan Harwood and Frank Davis by 16-3. The first triple led by Jim Davey won convincingly 16-3, but the other triple of Evelyn Nobbs, Frank Wiedeholz and Derek Carpenter went down 7-10. At the half way stage the points were now shared 8-8 with Kent +6 shots.

Kent were now looking for a surge, but it was not to be. Only Alan Faulkner won, 16-11, with Cliff Lorkins going down for the second time 10-17. Mick Spurgeon’s team could not recover their morning dominance and lost by one shot, 8-9, whilst the other four led by Derrick Groom also lost by one shot 9-10. It was now West Sussex in the ascendancy leading by 4pts but down by 2 shots. All eyes now turned to the last session with Kent needing a fighting finish. Derek Carpenter’s trio were unable to turn things round and went down 11-13, however, Andres Rycraft, Bryan Smith and skip Jim Davey had another good win 14-6. In the pairs, Alan Harwood and Frank Davis lost by just one shot 11-12, but Sue Smith and Ray Anns had another good win, 16-9.

This left Kent trailing 14pts to 18pts with +14 shots and with 4pts on offer for aggregate shots, Kent finished up scrapping a draw 18-18. This match demonstrated the need to keep shot differences tight. Kent’s next match is the return fixture against West Sussex at Hailsham on 27 October and Kent will need to refocus and pick up their performance.

Kent Premier Win Their Second Game of the 2007/2008 Season.

The Kent County Premier Short Mat Bowls Team were hoping to continue their winning start to the 2007-2008 season when they visited Surrey on Sunday 14th October away at Bisley.

Despite an enforced shuffle of the team, the first session saw Kent Premier get off to a good start securing 5 points from the first 4 games. The wins coming from the Kent singles player; Andrew Connors, winning 13-8 and the Kent four of Sonia Watson, Graham Nobbs, Reg Wager and Cliff Henry, winning 9-6. The final point came through the four of Peter Blackman, Lee Freeman, Gary Best and Thomas Coles, with a draw 9-9.

The second session saw Kent and Surrey share the points. Kent’s points came from both triples teams; Irene Benton, Tim Harwood and John Rycraft, winning 14-8 and Linda Wynn, Derek Ford and Gary Allard, winning 9-8.

At the half way stage Kent were leading Surrey by 9pts to 7pts but Surrey had a +6 shots lead.

Kent needed to get a good start after lunch to put some pressure back on the home side and that they did. The third session saw Kent win 3 of the 4 games. Kent missed out on all 4 games as Jody Frampton unfortunately lost his second game by 1 shot. Kent’s 6 points came through convincing wins from both Andrew Connors, winning 17-5 and both the fours teams; Peter Blackman, Lee Freeman, Gary Best and Thomas Coles, winning 19-3 and Sonia Watson, Graham Nobbs, Reg Wager and Cliff Henry, winning 9-5.

Match Report –West Sussex “A” v Kent “A” – 27 Oct 07

The Kent “A” team travelled to Westergate to play their return match against West Sussex looking to improve on their performance of two weeks ago.

As with the last game Kent got off to a bad start, picking up only one point in the first session and that was achieved by Alan Faulkner picking up three shots on the last end to draw 12-12. The other single, played by Frank Davis, resulted in defeat by 5 shots to 16. Both fours teams lost, Derrick Groom’s four of Dick Stagg, Colin Watson and Danny Cosgree by 6-10 and Mick Spurgeon’s four by just one shot, 8-9.

Kent now looked to the pairs and triples to recover the situation. The pairing of Sue Smith and Ray Anns went into the last end all square, but the West Sussex skip produced a timely shot to take the jack into the ditch to secure one shot, thereby winning 11-12. The other pair of Alan Harwood and Chris Groom could not quite hold on to their opponents and lost narrowly 14-16. The triple skippered by Jim Davey with Andrea Rycraft and Jan Davey won well, by 17 shots to 9. This was Kent’s only success in the session as the other triple of Evelyn Nobbs, Frank Wiedeholz and Derek Carpenter lost 7-12. At the half way stage Kent were losing heavily 3pts – 13pts and minus 16 shots.

The afternoon session needed to be strong to salvage any self respect, but things did not improve with Derrick Groom’s four losing again, this time 2-11.The other four of Rita Horn, Keith Austen, Allan Stroud and skip Mick Spurgeon picked up 4 shots on the last two ends to snatch a draw, 8-8. Frank Davis in his singles game was 6-10 down after eleven ends but maintained his composure picking up 5 shots in the last four ends to win 11-10. Frank Faulkner however could not hold onto his opponent and went down 7-18.

It now needed a massif effort if Kent were to recover anything from the game. It was not to be. Jim Davey’s trio went down heavily 2-25 and Derek Carpenter’s triple lost 3-19. This left the pairs to salvage a few points which they did with two wins. Sue Smith and Ray Anns picking up 5 shots in the last three ends to win 15-13, whilst Alan Harwood and Chris Groom had the best win of the day 20-11.

This was not a good day for Kent. They finished up losing 10pts to 26pts and minus 63 shots. One of the heaviest ever loses suffered by Kent. They will have to drastically improve in the next match against East Sussex at Hailsham on 3 November if they are to progress to the Knock out stages of the Inter County Competition.

Kent B Team lose unbeaten record.

The new year started badly for the Kent B team as they were beaten by West Sussex at home on the 5/1/2008 by 12 points to 24 points.  The shot difference was a narrow 18 shot margin and many of the games were extremely close with the games being decided on the last ends.

The first session started unusually poorly. Percy Boozer won his singles match 13 – 9 but these were the only 2 points scored.  However the 2nd session Kent gained 5 out of the 8 points with the pairs of John Hallett and Roy Palmer and Gloria Hadfield with Alan Ellis both winning comprehensively.   This was backed up by the triple of Ray Ryder, Pat Boozer and Terry Desmond drawing 7-7 all.  Kent were only 2 points behind but had +9 shot difference.

A good 3rd session was vital but it was not to be.   Tony Horn and Percy Boozer both lost and the four of Gwen Wager, John Bown, Tony Mulcuck and Barry Baker were unlucky to lose 6-7, whilst the four of Steve Francis, Garry Cook, Albert Walker and Dave Kruse salvaged a point.  It was now 16 – 8 to West Sussex but Kent could still do it.  John Hallett and Roy Palmer again won their match with Ray Ryder, Pat Boozer and Terry Desmond backing them up by winning 13 – 9. Marion Smith, Brian Porter, Alan Avis and the pairing of Gloria Hadfield with Alan Ellis kept it tight but West Sussex were the more determined and gained the 4 points.

This was a good away win for West Sussex so Kent now look forward to the return fixture on the 2nd February hoping to revenge this defeat.

At the half way stage Kent were leading Cheshire by 9pts to 7pts, but Cheshire held a +6 shot lead.

Kent and Cheshire shared the spoils in the third session, 4 points each. Wins again came through the single of Mark Wiedeholz, winning 14-11, followed by a good win from the four of Irene Benton (Burham SMBC), Reg Wager (Langley SMBC), Graham Nobbs (Tunbury SMBC) and Cliff Henry (Tunbury SMBC), winning 9-5.

Kent went into the fourth and final session needing to win 3 out of the last 4 games, unless they could pull back the 9 shot deficit.

Match report – East Sussex “B” v Kent “B” – 8 Mar 08

Kent “B” secure pleasing away win at East Sussex.

The Kent “B” Team adjusted well to the slow mats at East Sussex and won this match confidently and convincingly by 23 points to 13 (186 shots to 175). The team was led the way by the fours, skippered by Barry Baker and Albert Walker, scoring a maximum 8 points out of 8.  This was backed up by the pairs of John Hallett and Roy Palmer, who were unbeaten and the pairing of Gloria Hadfield and Terry Desmond, who lost their first game, but then narrowly won the second, 15-14.

The triples of Garry Cook, Alan Ellis and Dave Kruse and Ray Ryder, Pat Boozer and Alan Avis managed to keep it tight, whilst the singles of Percy Boozer and Tony Horn found it difficult to adapt in their first matches, but then Percy had a fine 17-8 win in his second.

Overall team spirit and morale was very high with the Kent “B” Team remaining undefeated in their away matches.

Match Report – Kent “A” v West Sussex “A” –9 March 08

A return to the Caroline Chisholm School in Northampton on 9th March saw the Kent “A” team attempt to retain the Inter County Championship title for the third year running. West Sussex “A” were the opponents, as indeed they were last year.

The first session of singles and fours went the way of the opponents as Cliff Lorkins, Hornhill SMBC, went down 7-10 and Alan Faulkner, Newington SMBC, lost 12-13. In the fours, Dick Stagg, Wye SMBC, Colin Watson, Burham SMBC, Derrick Groom, St Mary’s Platt SMBC and Bryan Smith, Shorne SMBC, won a close game 8-6, but Mick Spurgeon’s team, Hamstreet SMBC, of Rita Horn, Culverstone SMBC, Keith Austen, Hamstreet SMBC and Allan Stroud, Downswood SMBC, lost 5-7.

The second session saw the points shared. Sue Smith, Tunbury SMBC and Frank Davis, Chalk Village SMBC, lost 11-13, but Alan Harwood, Borden SMBC and Alan Hadfield, Hornhill SMBC, had a very good win, 20-12. The triple of Andrea Rycraft, Wye SMBC, Frank Wiedeholz, Tunbury SMBC and Jim Davey, Burham SMBC, only won two ends and went down 2-14. The other triple of Ray Anns and Danny Cosgree, both of Borden SMBC and Derek Carpenter, Tunbury SMBC produced a good result, winning 17-5.

At the half way stage it was Kent 6pts, West Sussex 10pts, with Kent minus 3 shots.

A good third session was needed by Kent, but West Sussex had other ideas and won all four games. Cliff Lorkins going down 11-13, Alan Faulkner 6-18, Bryan Smith’s four lost 5-8 and Mick Spurgeon’s team lost 6-12. West Sussex had done enough at this stage to wrest the trophy from Kent’s grasp.

The last session saw Sue Smith and Frank Davis winning 14-10 and Alan Harwood and Alan Hadfield put in a very creditable performance, to be the only team to win both their games, with a score of 13-12. Jim Davey’s trio drew 10-10, but Derek Carpenter’s team lost 7-12.

The final result was Kent 154 shots and 11pts, West Sussex 180 shots and 25pts. It has to be said that West Sussex deserved their win, playing consistently all day.

The Kent players voted Alan Hadfield, playing in his first season in the “A” team, as their Bowler of the Year. Well done Alan.

Match report – Kent “B” v West Sussex “B” – 22 Mar 08

BTeamShield-Mar08.jpgCHALLENGE SHIELD 2008.

On Saturday 22nd March 2008 Kent ‘B’ played their annual Challenge Shield match against West Sussex. This year it was Kent’s turn to host the match, so it was played at Strood Leisure Centre.

In the first of four sessions all of Kent’s triples started very brightly, winning four mats out of six, all by one shot. The second session also went to Kent, with them again winning four mats and West Sussex winning two mats. These results gave Kent a 18 points to 8 lead at the half way stage, but two shots behind.

In the third session Kent went to sleep, or had too much to eat and drink at lunch, as they only managed two wins and a draw making the fourth and last session very nerve wracking. Kent, however pulled out all the stops by winning five mats out of the six to give Kent “B” a 37 points and 254 shots to 15 points and 227 shots win. So Kent once again picked up the Challenge Shield for the sixth year running. This result gave their manager an undefeated run.

Thank you to all the ‘B’ team for their support and enthusiasm this year.

Burwash U18’s Singles Competition – Sun 25 Nov 07

Kent had three entrants into this competition this year; Christopher Wood, Christopher Philpott and Edward Selleck. There were a total of fourteen entrants from areas including Surrey, Kent, West Sussex and East Sussex.

The entrants were drawn into three groups and this year, the Kent players were drawn onto different mats.

Christopher Wood was in a group of 4; his match scores were as follows;

Won   13 - 5

Won   22 - 2

Won   19 -5

This put him through to the quarter finals.

Christopher Philpott was in a group of five; his match scores were as follows;

Won   8 - 7

Won   7 - 5

Lost   6 - 11

Won   10 – 8

This was also enough to put him through to the quarterfinals.

Edward Selleck’s was also in a group of five; his four match scores were;

Lost   7 - 13

Lost   2 - 16

Drew   7 - 7

Lost   6 – 9

The standard of bowling was exceptionally high and Edward should be proud of the way he performed on the day, especially as he has only been playing for approximately three months. He is a promising young bowler who could do very well in the future; well done.

The quarter finals saw Christopher Wood up against last year’s competition winner. After a very good game Christopher was unfortunately beaten 7 shots to 10. This is the last year that both Christopher Wood and his opponent will be able to play in the competition as they both turn 18 in the New Year.

Christopher Philpott was able to beat his opponent in the quarter finals, another promising young bowler from Surrey. The match score was 17 shots to 1. This put Chris into the semi-finals, but with the opposing competition getting stronger each round could Chris go any further?

Unfortunately, this year Chris was knocked out in the semi-finals, but it was a very close game with some extremely good bowling from both players. The score was 8 shots to 9.

The final saw last years and many other previous years, winner take first place again, winning 13 shots to 4.

Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to the organisers for making the day so enjoyable.

Next year will see a new face lift the winner’s trophy; hopefully they will be wearing a Kent shirt!

Pairs Final

The pair of Michelle Fitzgerald and Tim Rycraft won the County Pairs title at Strood Leisure Centre on Sunday 30 March 2008. In their semi-final they played T Harwood and A Harwood, Borden SMBC, in a game that after 5 ends was equal at 3 shots each. From that point onwards the Harwood pair were unable to win another end, eventually losing 3-11.

The second semi-final was between P Ramsden and A Avis and C England and T Coles. The Coles-England pairing lead throughout the game to win 10-2.

In the final, a close game was promised and it lived up to that expectation. Leading 5-1 after four ends the Coles-England pair lost a three on the 5th end, but held on to lead 8-7 after 8 ends. By winning the last end by 1 shot T Rycraft and M Fitzgerald took the final into an extra end. With the jack given away, C England drew a front toucher that stayed the winning shot until the last wood. The last wood delivered by T Rycraft nudged the shot wood to push the jack to his partner’s wood lying just behind the jack. By winning the extra end T Rycraft and M Fitzgerald won the final 9-8.

English National Pairs – April 2008

Having won the Kent County Pairs Qualifiers, played at Burham Village Hall, Linda Wynn and partner Gary Best, had progressed through to the National Finals which were played at Kettering on 4th April 2008.

Below is a personnel view from Linda of that day.

My day at Kettering turned out to be one of those experiences you never forget.

The excitement was all around the moment I stepped on the mat. Smile Gary kept saying, I thought I was but obviously not enough until…

We had reached our first knock out round and were losing. Gary had managed to save the 9th end by drawing in for a measure. A drawn end was given which gave us needing 3 shots to win on the last end. We were holding 2 and Gary having the last wood, skilfully played a drawing shot that gave us 3, it was pure poetry. The faces of the opposition turned to despair while I jumped and cheered, I couldn’t stop smiling!

We continued to win until we reached the semi final where we finally lost to a better team. It was a long, mentally tiring day but a great experience, thanks Gary.

Linda Wynn.

The following is an extract from the report posted on the ESMBA website at www.esmba.org.uk

The English National Short Mat Bowls Championship 2008

Held at Kettering Leisure Village on 3rd–6th April 2008.

Pairs.

Last 32.

Gary Best and Linda Wynn, Kent, found themselves 1-4 down against James Smith and Phil Atkins, Devon, but rallied to go 6-4 in front. However Devon took the lead 8-6. The Kent pair then dug deep and scored a three on the last end to win 9-8.

Last 16.

Gary Best and Linda Wynn, Kent, had a battle against Jon Pitcher and David Haywood, Warwickshire. It was level at 2-2 and 4-4, but then Kent took a 6-4 lead. A single each set up a final end with Warwickshire needing at least a two but they could only score a single and Kent won 7-6.

Quarter - Finals

Alan Jones, Dave Wooller, Essex v Gary Best, Linda Wynn, Kent.

Kent appeared to take control with Gary drawing well as they scored five shots in four ends to lead 5-2 after being 0-2 down, but Essex held on. At 8-4 with one end left Alan and Dave could only score a two, so Gary Best and Linda Wynn won 8-6.

Semi - Finals

Keith Alders, Matt Smith, West Midlands v Gary Best, Linda Wynn, Kent.

West Midlands took a 4-0 lead on the first end and then 5-1 with Matt drawing well. Kent scored a three with both Linda and Gary bowling at their best. It was 5-4 to the Midlanders. Linda counted with two woods round the jack on the next end but Keith Alders drew in and counted a single which he held. Keith ditched the jack on the sixth end and Matt drew to the line but Gary played a brilliant bowl to win the end, only one shot in it at 6-5 to the West Midlands pairing. Matt Smith wicked to the jack and held two but Gary fired the jack into the ditch and scored one to level the match 6-6.

Linda, leading well lay two on but Keith took one out and then Matt with controlled weight took the jack into the ditch and counted one. Gary hit Linda toucher into the ditch area but just lost the measure and so West Midlands now led 7-6 with two ends left. Three down Gary was forced to fire, he missed and ended up going four down as Keith Alders and Matt Smith won 11-6.

Keith Alders and Matt Smith went onto win the final.
