Match Report – Hampshire “A” v Kent “A” – 7 Oct 07
The Kent “A” team travelled to Swanmore, near Southampton, to play their third game of the season against Hampshire.
The first session saw Cliff Lorkins beaten by 2 shots in a very close game, 11-13. However, Alan Faulkner had a comprehensive win 22-5 in the other singles match. Both fours teams, Dick Stagg, Colin Watson, Danny Cosgree and skip Derrick Groom and Rita Horn, Keith Austen, Allan Stroud and Skip Mick Spurgeon won well, 9-5 and 15-5 respectively. The second session of pairs and triples had Sue Smith and Ray Anns winning 15-11, but Alan Harwood and Bryan Smith went down 4-15 to a very strong pair. The two triples of Andrea Rycraft and Jan and Jim Davey and Chris Groom, Frank Wiedeholz and Derek Carpenter both had good wins, 16-7 and 11-7. At the half way stage Kent were on top 12pts to 4pts with plus 34 shots.
The afternoon session began with a good win for Cliff Lorkins, 19-12 and a draw for Alan Faulkner, 13-13, in a quality game of drawing skills. Once again both fours teams had good wins, Derrick Groom’s four by 10-2 and Mick Spurgeon’s four by 10-3. The last session was shared points wise. Jim Davey’s trio had an excellent win, 22-5, while Derek Carpenter’s team had a poor start, being 2-9 down after 7 ends, but fought back to lose by only one shot, 8-9. In the pairs it was mixed fortunes. Sue Smith and Ray Anns were 10-5 up, but could not extend their score and lost 10-20, whilst Alan Harwood and Bryan Smith turned a 3-11 score after 6 ends around, to win impressively 19-13.
The final score was Kent 214 shots and 27pts to Hampshire 146 shots and 9pts.
Kent now turn their attention to the next match against West Sussex on 13 October at Strood Leisure Centre.
Match Report
– Kent “A” v West Sussex “A” – 13 Oct 07
At Strood Leisure Centre the Kent “A” team entertained a West Sussex team determined to upset Kent’s progress in the Inter County Championship. This was always going to be a needle match and so it turned out to be.
Kent got of to a slow start, only winning one of the first four games. The win was achieved by Mick Spurgeon’s team of Rita Horn, Keith Austen and Allan Stroud, winning comfortably 22-5. The other four of Dick Stagg, Colin Watson, Danny Cosgree and Derrick Groom went down 7-18. In a rare lapse both singles, Cliff Lorkins and Alan Faulkner, lost 12-20 and 7-18 respectively, leaving Kent2pts to 6 down and -13 shots.
The second session of pairs and triples saw Kent trying to recover the situation. Both pairs produced good wins, Sue Smith and Ray Anns by 18 shots to 8 and Alan Harwood and Frank Davis by 16-3. The first triple led by Jim Davey won convincingly 16-3, but the other triple of Evelyn Nobbs, Frank Wiedeholz and Derek Carpenter went down 7-10. At the half way stage the points were now shared 8-8 with Kent +6 shots.
Kent were now looking for a surge, but it was not to be. Only Alan Faulkner won, 16-11, with Cliff Lorkins going down for the second time 10-17. Mick Spurgeon’s team could not recover their morning dominance and lost by one shot, 8-9, whilst the other four led by Derrick Groom also lost by one shot 9-10. It was now West Sussex in the ascendancy leading by 4pts but down by 2 shots. All eyes now turned to the last session with Kent needing a fighting finish. Derek Carpenter’s trio were unable to turn things round and went down 11-13, however, Andres Rycraft, Bryan Smith and skip Jim Davey had another good win 14-6. In the pairs, Alan Harwood and Frank Davis lost by just one shot 11-12, but Sue Smith and Ray Anns had another good win, 16-9.
This left Kent trailing 14pts to 18pts with +14
shots and with 4pts on offer for aggregate shots, Kent finished up scrapping a
draw 18-18. This match demonstrated the need to keep shot differences tight.
Kent’s next match is the return fixture against West Sussex at Hailsham on 27
October and Kent will need to refocus and pick up their performance.
Match Report – Surrey v Kent
Premier – 14 Oct 07
The Kent

Premier get off to a good start securing 5 points from the first 4 games. The
wins coming from the Kent singles player; Andrew Connors, winning 13-8 and the
Kent four of Sonia Watson, Graham Nobbs, Reg Wager and Cliff Henry, winning 9-6.

At the half way stage Kent were leading Surrey by 9pts to
7pts but Surrey had a +6 shots lead.
Kent needed to get a good start after lunch to put some pressure
back on the home side and that they did. The third session saw Kent win 3 of
the 4 games. Kent missed out on all 4 games as
The fourth and final session saw Kent again finish strongly and extend

Saturday 27th October.
Match Report –West Sussex “A” v Kent “A” – 27 Oct 07
The Kent “A” team travelled to Westergate to play their return match against West Sussex looking to improve on their performance of two weeks ago.
As with the last game Kent got off to a bad start, picking up only one point in the first session and that was achieved by Alan Faulkner picking up three shots on the last end to draw 12-12. The other single, played by Frank Davis, resulted in defeat by 5 shots to 16. Both fours teams lost, Derrick Groom’s four of Dick Stagg, Colin Watson and Danny Cosgree by 6-10 and Mick Spurgeon’s four by just one shot, 8-9.
Kent now looked to the pairs and triples to recover the situation. The pairing of Sue Smith and Ray Anns went into the last end all square, but the West Sussex skip produced a timely shot to take the jack into the ditch to secure one shot, thereby winning 11-12. The other pair of Alan Harwood and Chris Groom could not quite hold on to their opponents and lost narrowly 14-16. The triple skippered by Jim Davey with Andrea Rycraft and Jan Davey won well, by 17 shots to 9. This was Kent’s only success in the session as the other triple of Evelyn Nobbs, Frank Wiedeholz and Derek Carpenter lost 7-12. At the half way stage Kent were losing heavily 3pts – 13pts and minus 16 shots.
The afternoon session needed to be strong to salvage any self respect, but things did not improve with Derrick Groom’s four losing again, this time 2-11.The other four of Rita Horn, Keith Austen, Allan Stroud and skip Mick Spurgeon picked up 4 shots on the last two ends to snatch a draw, 8-8. Frank Davis in his singles game was 6-10 down after eleven ends but maintained his composure picking up 5 shots in the last four ends to win 11-10. Frank Faulkner however could not hold onto his opponent and went down 7-18.
It now needed a massif effort if Kent were to recover anything from the game. It was not to be. Jim Davey’s trio went down heavily 2-25 and Derek Carpenter’s triple lost 3-19. This left the pairs to salvage a few points which they did with two wins. Sue Smith and Ray Anns picking up 5 shots in the last three ends to win 15-13, whilst Alan Harwood and Chris Groom had the best win of the day 20-11.
This was not a good day for Kent. They finished up losing 10pts to 26pts and minus 63 shots. One of the heaviest ever loses suffered by Kent. They will have to drastically improve in the next match against East Sussex at Hailsham on 3 November if they are to progress to the Knock out stages of the Inter County Competition.
Match Report – East Sussex v Kent
Premier – 27 Oct 07
The Kent
Kent again got off to a solid start by winning 3 of the 4 games on
offer. The wins came through both the Kent singles; Mark Wiedeholz, winning
13-12 and Tim Rycraft, winning 20-10, with the four of Peter Blackman, Alan
Hadfield, Tim Harwood and Thomas Coles, winning 9-6.
The second session went a similar way with Kent dominating and taking 5
points. These were won as follows; the pair of
At the half way stage Kent were leading East Sussex by 11pts
to 5pts and +10 shots.
The third session saw the points shared. The 4pts for Kent
were won through the single of Mark Wiedeholz, winning 10-9 and an emphatic win
from the four of Peter Blackman, Alan Hadfield, Tim Harwood and Thomas Coles,
winning 15-1.
The fourth and final session saw Kent come out strongly but finish
poorly by only talking 2 of the 8 points available. This came through the
triple of Gloria Hadfield, John Rycraft and Jeff Vanns, winning 8-6.
Despite a poor final session Kent ended the day with their
third win of the round robin group by beating East Sussex by 21pts (160 shots)
to 15pts (158 shots).
Kent Premier looks forward to their next
match away to London on Sunday 4th November 2007.
Match Report – East Sussex “A” v Kent “A” – 3 Nov 07
The Kent “A” team travelled to Hailsham to play East Sussex needing to
boost their fortunes after their loss last week to West Sussex.
The first session singles saw Cliff Lorkins lose on the last end 11-12
whilst Alan Faulkner picked up five shots on the last three ends to earn a draw
14-14. Derrick Groom’s four of Dick Stagg, Colin Watson and Frank Davis won 8-4
and Rita Horn, Keith Austen, Allan Stroud and skip Mick Spurgeon returned to
winning form, edging home 6-5. Kent finished the first session 5 points to 3 up
with plus 4 shots.
In the second session the points were shared with both pairs of Sue
Smith and Ray Anns and Alan Harwood and Alan Hadfield losing, 6-14 and 14-15
respectively. However the triples of Andrea Rycraft, Bryan Smith and skip Jim
Davey and Chris Groom, Danny Cosgree and Derek Carpenter both won well, 12-4
and 9-4. At the half way stage it was 9 points to 7 to Kent with plus 8 shots.
The afternoon session could not however see Kent keep up the momentum
with Alan Faulkner going down 11-17 and Cliff Lorkins losing again on the last
end, this time 11-13. Mick Spurgeon’s four did keep their form to win 11-8 and
Derrick Groom’s team were unfortunate to lose by one shot on the last end 6-7.
This now gave the edge to East Sussex, now two points ahead with plus 2 shots.
The last session needed a big push from Kent, but it was not to be.
Once again both pairs lost, Ray Anns by 8-12 and Alan Hadfield 4-15. Jim
Davey’s triple fought back after being 5-12 down with three ends to play to
lose by just one shot, 12-13, but Derek Carpenter’s trio did salvage a couple
of points winning 8-6. This left Kent losing their second game in eight days,
this time by 13pts to 23pts and minus 12 shots.
Whilst Kent currently stand top of their round robin section, both East
Sussex and West Sussex have games in hand and can overtake them. Kent now have
time to regroup before playing their penultimate game at Strood leisure Centre
on 1 December against Surrey.
