The following report has been submitted by Peter Richards, Newington SMBC.
Short mat bowlers from all over Kent and Essex converged on Strood Sports
Centre on Monday 5th May 2008 in aid of the Demelza House Children’s
Hospice.
This event now in its 10th year has become one of the
most popular annual bowls competitions on the Short Mat calendar, with
this year, one hundred and eighty bowlers taking part.
The organizers Alan, Jack and June Faulkner from Sittingbourne would like
to thank the Kent County Short Mat Bowling Association for the free loan
of all of the equipment for the day and Strood Sports Centre for the free
use of the hall. Without their continual contribution this event would be very
difficult to run.

Winning
triple of Rod Wynn, J Bassett and David Burgin with Robert Tolson from
Demelza House. |
This year’s competition was outstanding. With six teams winning all of their
games in the morning session they all carried six points forward to the
afternoon games. How things can change, with a change of mat, the afternoon
session bought about a change in fortune for many of the teams. Only two teams
won all of their afternoon games, gaining another six points.
The final placings came down to who had the highest shot total for
the day, giving one of the closest finishes in recent years.
This years Champions were John Bassett, Rod Wynn and David Burgin,
from Kemsing Short Mat Bowls Club with 12 points and plus 54 shots. A
close second were S Killington and team from East Hanningfield (Essex) with 12
points and plus 38 shorts. Third place went to A Connors and team from Tovil
SMBC, with 11 points.
This years Trophies were presented by Robert Tolson from Demelza House who
also accepted from June Faulkner just under a £1000 raised from this
years event.
Snodland

ends. The result was Kent Select 16pts – 107 shots, Snodland SMBC 0pts – 47
shots.
