Friends of Kent v Norfolk Over 60’s
On
the 8th August 2008 a group of Kent bowlers went up to Norfolk to
play the annual match against the Norfolk Over 60’s.
The trip started
out as a 3-4 hour journey, but took more than 5 hours. Having first been held
up at Dartford Tunnel we then encountered hold up’s on the M11 and eventually
arrived at our hotel 15 minutes before our arranged evening meal.
On
the Saturday we played the Over 60’s where we usually have a good day and a
good result. This year, I think, the journey up must have affected the
performance as we never really got into the game. In the first session we, The
Friends of Norfolk as we are known up there, only won 3 mats out of the 10
played and drew 1. Session 2 was better with the Kent team winning 3 mats out
of 7. Session 3 again saw the Kent team only win 3 mats and drawing 1 out of
the 10 mats played, giving Norfolk Over 60’s 34 points, 262 shots and Friends
of Norfolk 20 points, 222 shots. Time for lunch.
After
a roast beef meal and apple crumble we decided we had to do better, so with
this hearty meal inside us we returned to the mats and session 4.
Session
4 started off well for us, winning 4 mats out of 7. But then I think some of us
must have thought it was Sunday and fell asleep, as in session 5 we only won 3
mats and drew 1 out of 10 mats played. In session we woke up again and we won 4
mats out of 7, but alas it was not enough. The final score was Norfolk Over
60’s 59 points, 546 shots to Friends of Norfolk 43 points, 436 shots.
So
we returned back to the hotel for an evenings entertainment, which everyone
enjoyed and returned home on Sunday morning looking forward to next years
encounter.

one sided game Lee Bull could not compete with A Connors who eventually won 13
shots – 2.
In
the final M Dillon took an early lead and after 5 ends was holding a 5 shots –
3 advantage. By taking 3 shots on the 7th end to lead 9 shots – 3, M
Dillon had virtually sealed his win and A Connors was only able to win 1 shot
on each of the last 2 ends to lose the final by 5 shots – 9.

shots – 3 up and were able to maintain their lead running out winners by 9
shots – 4.
In
the final the Langley pair picked up 5 shots in the first two ends and after 5
ends were 8 shots – 3 up. The Tunbury pair then fought back to be trailing by 3
shots after the 8th end, 6 shots – 9. However, the Langley pair held
their nerve on the last end and only dropped 1 shot to run out winners by 9
shots – 7.

Valley SMBC. The Culverstone triple took an early lead and were 6 shots- 3 up
after 5 ends. After 8 ends the Hempstead Valley triple had fought back and were
trailing by one shot at 7-8, but were unable to win the last end and the
Culverstone triple won 10 shots – 7.
In
the final the Tunbury triple’s good form continued and an early lead was again
established, with them racing to a 7 shots – 2 lead after 5 ends. Culverstone

the County fours title on Sunday 26 April at Strood Leisure Centre. In their
semi final against Gwen Norris, Lee Bull, Steve Barratt and Thomas Coles the

of sight at 13 shots – 0. The Tovil team ended up winning 15 shots – 1.
In
the second semi final Carmel Luff, Dominic Luff, Rita Horn and Tony Horn,
Culverstone SMBC, were opposite Chris Wood, Alan Hadfield, Alan Faulkner and
Cliff Lorkins, Hornhill SMBC. After 5 ends the Hornhill four had pulled ahead
at 5 shots – 1and with two shots gained in the following two ends by their
opponents it was all to play for in the final two ends. The Culverstone four
however, were unable to pick up any more shots and eventually lost 4 shots – 9.

Carol Smith’s tells of her experience of going to Northampton
for the National Finals.
“My experience of being a
part of the Under 18’s national competition.
When you’ve never had the chance to be apart of a big
competition, in a completely new environment than you are used to, full of
people around your age group; you think of it as a big opportunity to be the
best you can and to get as far as you can.
I have now been apart of the Under 18’s national competition
held in Northampton for two years. My first visit (last year, 2008) I was a bag
full of nerves. My biggest worry was not knowing what to expect. I hadn’t the
slightest clue what I was walking into and also, who and what I was up against.
Three games had to be played, to either win the mat or get through as the best
loser for the knock out stages. Unfortunately I lost 2 games out of 3 which
resulted to my journey back home, I felt as though I let myself down and could
have done better.
This year, 2009, I headed back to Northampton with
determination to do better and get further than last year, this time knowing
what to expect and full of excitement gave me considerable confidence.
My first game was won easily and enjoyable, made me feel I
was able to step up my game to the next level. My second game unsuccessfully
lost, although I felt I didn’t let myself down as I kept hold of my confidence
and didn’t become that weaker bowler I know I can be when I have determination
and strongly feel under pressure to do well.
Having a stranger who spectated my game with a positive
attitude firmly told me how I’d made that an interesting and extremely
enjoyable and competitive game to watch, he also convincingly told me how I was
a strong enough player to beat many of the competitors there on that very day.
Unluckily to finish off I had a very challenging match, my
most competitive game in a singles competition I’d had since I’d started
bowling.
From my experience I can without a doubt say It’s an amazing
experience with a calm yet exceedingly competitive atmosphere, it’s one of my
best bowling experiences.
It was an honour to be the only competitor to play for Kent!”

Kent Youth Team versus Minster Bowls Club at Minster -
Saturday 11th October 2008
On Saturday 11th October the
Kent Youth team visited Minster Bowls club and enjoyed a good days bowling.
They played three rounds of three triples over 11 ends and all the teams played
exceptionally well. In the first round Kent Youth won two matches and drew the
other, giving them 5 points to 1. The second round was not quite as good for
the Youth; gaining only 2 points to Minster’s 4. However, in the third and
final round the Youth were back on form, probably due to the bacon baguettes they
had for lunch! and gained 4 points to Minsters 2. One triple also scoring a HOT
SHOT on one end; well done.
This meant that the final scores were –
Youth Team 11 points, 87 shots, and Minster 7 points, 68 shots.
Well done to everyone who took part on the
day and thanks to Minster Bowls Club for hosting the event.
