Mark Wiedeholz takes on Gary Best in
a semi final |
|
Jeff Vanns and Gary Best before the singles final |
Jeff Vanns from Langley SMBC won the County Singles title at Strood Leisure Centre on Sunday 18 April 2010. In his semi final he played Martin Matthews, Tunstall SMBC. Leading 4 shots – 1 shot after the 5th end Jeff dropped 3 shots on the 6th end, but Martin was unable to take advantage and lost 4 shots – 7 shots.
In the second semi final Gary Best, Tovil SMBC, took on Mark Wiedeholz, Tunbury SMBC. Not having won the County singles title, Gary started very quickly from the start and was 7 shots – 0 shots after three ends. Mark had a big ask in front of him and although he won five of the next six ends, was not able to pull back from the initial slow start with Gary winning 8 shots – 7 shots.
In the final both players took 3 shots in the first two ends and then traded one shot each until the 7th end which ended with Gary leading by the score of 6 shots – 5 shots. Jeff scored two shots on the 8th end and was holding shot on the last end with Gary to bowl his last wood. With no more than a woods gap to draw into, Gary did just that to take the final into an extra end. With a similar situation arising in the extra end, Gary needed to draw to the jack to take the title, but Jeff had too many woods close to the jack and with very little room to manoeuvre Gary failed to take the end. Jeff Vanns won the singles title 9 shots – 7 shots on the extra end.

Barbara and David French from Harrietsham SMBC won the County Pairs title at
Strood Leisure Centre on Sunday 14 March 2010. In their semi final they played
Linda Wynn and Derek Ford, Ditton SMBC. By taking 3 shots on the 2nd
end the Harrietsham pair were able to pull out to a lead of 5 shots – 2 shots
by the 5th end. The Ditton pair returned the favour by taking 3
shots on the 6th end, but could not recover when again gave 3 shots
away on the very next end. The final score was 9 shots – 6 shots to the
Harrietsham pair.
In the second semi final Irene Benton and Sonia Watson, Burham SMBC, played Michelle Carpenter and Mark Wiedeholz, Tunbury SMBC. The match started very tightly with after 4 ends the score tied at 3 shots each. The Tunbury pair then took command and run out winners 9 shots – 4 shots.
In the final 4 shots taken on the 3rd end by the Harrietsham pair helped them into a 5 shots – 1 shot lead which was quickly pulled back to 6 shots each by the 6th end. With 1 shot being won by the Harrietsham pair on the 7th end and a tied 8th end it was all to play for on the final end. The Harrietsham pair held their nerve to take 1 shot and win the title by 8 shots – 6 shots.
Peter & Maureen Richards and Jean Desmond
from Hempstead Valley SMBC won the County Triples title at Strood Leisure
Centre on Sunday 7 February 2010. In their semi final match they played Cliff Lorkins, Alan Hadfield & Chris Wood from
Hornhill SMBC. In a very close match, where the Hempstead Valley trio
were always just in front, the final score ended 9 shots – 5 shots to Hempstead
Valley.
In the second
semi final Brian Rust, Ann Curtis & Barbara French from Harrietsham
SMBC played against Joan Golding, Barbara
Schultz and Gordon Elliott from Joydens Wood SMBC. The Harrietsham triple were
always in command of the match eventually winning by 13 shots – 4 shots.
In the final
the Harrietsham triple kept on the tails of their eventual winners, being only
one down after 5 ends at 3 shots – 4 shots and within touching distance after 8
ends at 5 shots – 8 shots. The Hempstead Valley trio then took command and ran
out winners by 11 shots – 5 shots.
Irene Benton, Sonia Watson, Thomas Coles and Mick Sayer, from Burham & Langley SMBC’s, won the County Fours title at Strood Leisure Centre on Sunday 21 March 2010. In their semi final match they played Michelle Carpenter, Frank Wiedeholz, Derek Carpenter and Mark

Wiedeholz from Tunbury SMBC. Having lost the first two ends, the Tunbury
four pulled back to 6 shots – 7 shots by the 5th end, but were never
able to take the lead and eventually the Langley Burham partnership won by 14
shots – 8 shots.
In the second semi final the St Marys Platt SMBC four of John Rider, Chris Groom, Barry Baker and Derrick Groom were never in the game against Andrew Player, Scott Freeman, Trevor Burt and Lee Freeman from Stone-in-Oxney SMBC, eventually losing by 2 shots – 13 shots.
In the final the Langley Burham four took an early advantage to lead 6 shots – 2 shots after five ends. A 3 shot win on the 8th end by the eventual winners meant that the Stone four required five shots to take the game to an extra end. That task was just out of their reach as they were only able to take four shots to lose the final by 9 shots – 10 shots.

National
Finals report
In the U18’s finals Andrew Rodger, in his first appearance at the finals, won two and lost one game in the round robin stage of the competition to qualify for the knockout stage. Andrew was beaten in his first match at the last 16 stage of the competition. To see his memories of the experience click here.
Gary Allard played in the singles, pairs and triples competitions. In the singles he did not qualify from the round robin stage, having won one and lost two games. A similar fate befell Gary and Linda Wynn in the pairs, with them not managing a win in the round robin part of the competition. In the triples Gary was partnered by Linda Wynn and Derek Ford and this time their fortunes proved to be slightly better. Three wins in the round robin, against triple from London, won 9-5, Humber, won 8-4 and Surrey, won 9-8, meant progressing into the knockout stage. No further progress was made however with the Kent triple losing 3-10 to an Oxfordshire triple. On Gary’s own admission, a poor weekend, one in which he did not play at all well.
Linda’s view of the weekend was more upbeat saying: “This year’s Nationals venue was played at an indoor bowls centre, mat on mat. This allowed no room for error and was all down to your weight. One mistake and you lost the end and perhaps the match. This produced a brilliant match between the two single finalists, which went to an extra end.
Gary and I played well in our pairs matches but it wasn’t to be … entertaining though! When Derek joined us for the triples competition we got into our usual team spirit and won all our round robin games. However we made a fatal mistake in the first knockout match which made it impossible for us to get back into the game. Never mind we all enjoyed it and of course there’s always next year!!”
Andrew Rodger shares his thoughts of his day at the National U18’s
final.
My experience of being part of the under 18’s national competition
When you’ve never had the chance to be apart of a big competition in short mat, in a completely new environment than what you are used to, full of people that you don’t know around your age group; you think of it as a big opportunity and a big learning curve to get as far as you can.
This is the first time I have participated in the Under 18’s national competition this time in Bedfordshire. I was calm on the outside but I was a bag full of nerves on the inside hoping they wouldn’t show. My biggest worry was that I didn’t know what to expect. I had a clue what I would be facing but did not think for a moment it was going to be that hard.
I had three games to play, to either win the group, or get runner up in the group to progress through to the knock out stage. My first game I lost 15-5 and that was really tough. I was lucky to get points out of that game, second game was much easier and I breezed through that winning 13-3, third game I won that 12-7. This brought us up to lunch time roughly about 12.
We started the next round roughly 12:50 and this was the start of the last 16, to begin with I dropped three within two ends but then I pulled back and it was nip and tuck until the 8th end where I was 1 behind on the overall scoreboard and picked up 2 to go 1 in front heading into the last end. On the last end I drew 3 close to the jack but obviously not close enough as my opponent drew shot with his last wood, this bought it to a extra end where I eventually lost it by 1.
For my 1st time
experience I can say it’s a amazing experience with a calm and exceedingly
competitive atmosphere, one of the best games I’ve played in my short mat
experience. It was an honour and privilege to play as the only bowler from
Kent”!

Burham
SMBC win inaugural 3-2-1
Top Club Team competition.
On Saturday 25th July 2010, at West
Malling Village Hall, a team from Burham won Kent's first 3-2-1
Competition against strong opposition from Tunbury “A” and Tunbury “B”.
After an extremely exciting and very close day's play the team of Pat and
Percy Boozer, Sonia Watson, Irene Benton, Jan and Jim Davey were level on
points with Tunbury “A”. Both teams had 21 points but Burham had the
superior shot difference of +15 making them the winners. The teams were very
grateful to Kit and Gary Cook for providing the refreshments all day and thanks
to West Malling SMBC for organising the venue.
The format of this 3-2-1 competition has been very interesting and hopefully
more clubs will join in this year.
