Both teams started off even in the first session with 1 win each in the singles and the pairs.

In the second session Kent came out on top winning both the fours and a triple.

Kent also won the third session with high scores to win both the singles, Roy Palmer winning 18–5 and Alan Faulkner also winning 15–9. The pair of Brian Cull and Alan Hadfield also won 18–7.

Kent now in front; can we win in West Sussex for the first time?

The fourth session was a nail biter, with Kent sharing the points with West Sussex, but just doing enough to give Kent the points they needed to get that very well earned victory. West Sussex 14 points, 144 shots, Kent 26 points, 179 shots.

                   Kent “A” v West Sussex - 31st October 2010

Is this going to be West Sussex’s revenge after losing to Kent at home.

The Kent players certainly hoped not as in the first session Kent never lost a mat, with a win and a draw in the singles and a 21–8 win for Ray Offord, standing in for Brian Cull, and Alan Hadfield and a 14–12 win for the other pair of Chris Groom and Derek Carpenter, coming back to win after being 11-3 down. First session to Kent.

The second session also went to Kent with West Sussex only managing a single win in the triples. Kent were flying.

In the third session Kent were unstoppable winning all 4 mats with great wins by Roy Palmer 21–7 and Alan Faulkner 14–11 in the singles and Ray Offord and Alan Hadfield 13–7 and Chris Groom and Derek Carpenter 16–11 winners in the pairs.

With the game over for West Sussex they came out fighting in the fourth session by winning three of the four mats but with the triple of Maureen Richards, Terry Desmond, also standing in for this game, and Peter Richards getting a 19–4 win, West Sussex missed out on the bonus shots. VICTORY for Kent 31 points, 205 shots and West Sussex 9 points, 137 shots. WELL DONE KENT “A”.

                   Kent “B” Team Pairs Competition – 31st October 2010

As the match against West Sussex was cancelled I decided to organise a friendly pair’s competition. The pairs were made up from 'B' Team players, Kent club players and 8 teams from Essex and the competition was played over 12 sessions, 6 sessions in the morning and another 6 sessions after lunch. Each session was played over 7 ends and there were 4 teams to a mat. In the afternoon everyone played on a different mat.
Everyone enjoyed the day with some good bowling and as you can see the top six teams were only separated by 3 points. The winners of the competition were Jan and Jim Davey.

Kent “B” v East Sussex – 6th November 2010
Kent 'B's second match of the season was at Snodland against East Sussex.
Kent got off to a good start by winning 3 games in the first session. In the singles Dave Kruse (Burham) and Frank Davis (Chalk) had good wins 21-9 and 17-2 respectively. In the pairs Maureen and Roger Staple (Ryarsh) had a good win as well, 24-2. Terry Desmond (Hempstead Valley) and Ray Sedge (Snodland) were unlucky, they were 7-14 down after 11 ends, then won the last 4 ends, which wasn't quite enough, losing 13-14.
The second session went the same way as the first session with Kent winning 3 games. In the triples Rita Manfield (Tunbury), Pat Finnis (Tovil) and
and Barry Baker (St Mary Platt) just scraped it 13-12. The fours both had convincing wins with Jean Desmond (Hempstead Valley), Garry Cook (Malling), Brian Rust (Harrietsham) and Pat Solly (Cavaliers) winning 17-2 and Barbara Buse and John Bown (Hornhill), Gordon Elliott (Joydens Wood) and Tony Drew (Chalk) winning 11-5.
Kent won every game in the third session. Dave Kruse and Frank Davis again had good wins in the singles, 29-4 and 22-5 respectively. In the pairs Maureen and Roger Staple had another good win, 13-9 and Terry Desmond and Ray Sedge won 14-10.
In the last session I think Kent got a bit complacent, only winning 1 game with the triple of John Rider (St Mary Platt), Jo Nobbs (Borden) and Allan Ellis (Tunbury), 13-8.
The final was Kent 'B' 30 pts - 236 shots, East Sussex 10 pts - 133 shots.

Back

Hampshire v Kent “A” – 14th November 2010

Kent and Hampshire shared the points in the first session of this game, Hampshire winning both the singles and Kent winning the pairs.

The second session was no different with Hampshire and Kent  both winning a triple each and Hampshire picking up three points in the fours, leaving Kent with just one point gained in the fours.

So it was into the third session and Kent were really having an off day and only managed to get two points out of the four mats. The win was a 24-8 win in the pairs by Brian Cull and Alan Hadfield. Very unusually the singles never got a point. 15 points to 9 down.

Kent had it all to do in the last session, win three mats and get the bonus points and we win the match. Unfortunately we could only get a result in a triple and our unbeaten record had gone, Hampshire winning 23 points to 17 and 195 shots to Kent’s 177.

Back

London v Kent “B” – 14th November 2010

Honours were even in the third session. In the singles Dave Kruse (Burham) and Frank Davis had comfortable wins 17-7 and 18–7 respectively.
Honours were even again in the last session. The triple of Margaret Marshall (Ryarsh), Dave Thompsett (Tunstall) and Bryan Smith (Shorne) won 14 – 6 and the four of Jane and Keith Williams, Pat Finnis and Pat Solly winning 7-2. Going into the last end the Kent four were 6 - 2 up and with the last shot of the match Kent were holding 1 shot, but needed 2 shots to share the bonus points and 3 shots to win the bonus points and the match. The Kent four could only take the 1 shot on the last end and London won the fours bonus points by 28 shots -27.
The final score was London 22 pts - 187 shots, Kent 'B' 18 pts - 159 shots.

Kent “A” v Northamptonshire – 13th February 2011

Kent could not have started this Quarter Final off any better. In the first session they never lost a mat, with the singles winning 16-10 and 12-11 and the pairs both winning 16-8 and 15-9, what a great start.

The second session also went Kent's way with the triples getting a win and a draw and the fours a win and a loss.

Kent now seeing victory in their sites went into the third session full of confidence and ended with three wins and a loss. Game won. Now all the triples and fours had to do was to make sure of the win by winning two mats, and they did not let the team down, winning three mats.

So now we have to look forward to a Semi - Final clash with Devon on the 6th March. We can't wait.

Kent “A” v Devon “A” – ICC Semi Final – 6th March 2011

Was this going to be third time lucky for Kent? Two years running Kent have been knocked out in the Semi's.

Kent did not start off very well in the first session, only winning one mat out of four. Roy Palmer getting a 15-4 win in the singles.

The second session was a complete turn around with the triples winning 9-6 and 13-11 and a four winning 12-6. So going into lunch it was all square with Kent 8 points 80 shots and Devon 8 points 80 shots.

I do not know what the pairs teams had for lunch but it certainly did them good with Brian Cull and Alan Hadfield winning 21-13 and Chris Groom and Derek Carpenter winning 25-3. Unfortunately the singles could not get a result after two hard battles.

So it was into the last session. Kent had to win three out of four mats to make sure of victory, but Devon were not going to give in easily and won two mats. The points were all square so it was down to the bonus shots. Kent had the pairs and the triples with Devon winning the singles. It was the last end of the last fours game, Kent were two shots down and were holding two shots, just. The Devon skip bowled his last wood but it went past the head. Derrick Groom has last wood, he goes up to look at the end, he comes back, we are holding two. I ask him if he is sure, yes he say’s, in that case do not bowl your last wood. Decision made, Devon skip calls for the umpire, every member of the Kent team went silent, after what seemed a very long wait and several measures two shots it was, big CHEER from the Kent Team. At last Kent “A” get to the final and this year the game is against Somerset.

                   Kent “A” v Somerset “A” – ICC Final – 13th March 2011

KENT “A” are the 2010/2011 ICC Champions having beaten Somerset 24pts-16pts.

It was a very hard fought battle and Kent started off very well winning both the Singles and a Pair.

ICC Final-2011.jpg

ICC Final-2011-2.jpg

In the second session points were shared with Somerset winning the Triples and Kent winning the Fours.

The third session was also shared, Somerset winning the Pairs and Kent the Singles.

So it was into the final session with Kent needing two mats and two bonus shot points to secure the title. With one triple getting a 15-13 win, it was down to the fours. On the 8th end the team of Carol and Jason Smith, Martin Matthews and Derrick Groom were all square at 6-6 and they came through, getting a four on the last end to win 10-6. The other four of Valerie Matthews, Nicky Bartlett, Trixie Jones and Keith Austen were 8-6 up with one end to play and three shots down when the jack was knocked back giving Kent the shot and a 9-6 win. Fantastic, two extra points just to make sure of victory.

The title was ours, KENT “A” ENGLISH CHAMPIONS!!!
