Matt
Dillon, Langley SMBC, won the County Singles title held at Strood Leisure
Centre on Sunday 17 April 2011. His semi final match was against Derek Ford,
Ditton SMBC, and he took an early lead which was held on to throughout the
match. After three ends Matt was leading 7 shots-0 and although Derek pulled
back to 4 shots-9 after six ends Matt held on to win
12 shots-7.
In
the second semi final Mark Wiedeholz, Tunbury SMBC, played Andrew Connors,
Tovil SMBC. Andrew took four shots on the first two ends, but by the seventh
end Mark was leading 8 shots-4. From then on it became
very close and after nine ends Andrew was winning 9 shots-8,
two shots in the 10th end gave Mark one shot advantage and Andrew,
in the last end, was holding one shot with the last wood to bowl. However, he
was unable to draw the second shot and an extra end was played in which Mark
won by one shot.
The
final was another tense and close match. Matt was leading 3
shots-1 after 3 ends, but from then on it was all square at the 5th,
7th and 9th ends with Matt holding a one shot advantage
after 10 ends. Matt drew four woods to surround the jack on the last end and
Mark was unable either to kill the end or draw in, with Matt
winning 10 shots-6.

Valerie
and Martin Matthews, Tunstall SMBC, won the County Pairs competition held at Strood
Leisure Centre on Sunday 20 March 2011. Their semi final match was an all
Tunstall SMBC affair with the Matthews pair up against David Thompsett and
Francis Brady. The Matthews pair started very quickly and after four ends were 8 shots-1 up. Even though four of the next five ends were
won by D Thompsett and F Brady, after nine ends the Matthews pair were winning
9-6 and 2 shots on the final end gave V & M Matthews a place in the final
with the score of 11-6.
The
second semi final was between Clare Thorneycroft and Jeff Vanns, Langley SMBC
and Rod Wynn and John Bassett, Kemsing SMBC. Again one side started very
strongly and after six ends the Langley pair were 7 shots-2
up. The Kemsing pair were unable to recover, winning
two of the remaining ends and the Langley pair booked their place in the final
with a 10-5 win.
In
the final each side started well and after five ends the Tunstall pair were 4 shots-3 up. After nine ends there was still only one
shot between the sides with the Tunstall pair still holding the upper hand at 7 shots-6. The Langley pair were
unable to win any further ends and Valerie and Martin Matthews won 11 shots-6.

Gavin
Knight, Ray Anns and Graham Nobbs, Borden SMBC, won the County Triples title
held at Strood Leisure Centre on Sunday 10 April 2011. Their semi final match
was against the Tovil SMBC triple of Lee Smith, Chris England and Andrew
Connors. After five ends the Tovil triple were 9 shots-3
up and were holding shots in the eighth end when the jack was killed. The
replayed end was won by the Borden triple to level the scores at 9 shots-9. All the remaining ends were won by the Borden
triple who eventually won the match by 16 shots-9.
In
the second semi final Pat Finnis, Nicky Bartlett and Gary Best, Tovil SMBC,
were paired up against Linda Wynn, Derek Ford and Gary Allard, Kemsing, Ditton
and Tovil SMBC’s. After four ends G Allard’s triple were winning by 5 shots-4. On the seventh end the jack was driven off the
mat by G Allard and at the end of the replayed end, G Allard’s triple was
holding 3 shots to lead 10 shots-5. G Best’s triple
took one shot on the next two ends but were unable to claw any more shots back
to eventually loose 7 shots-14.
In
the final a five shot win on the fifth end put the G Nobb’s
triple in the driving seat at 9 shots-2 up. The sixth
end was tied and although G Allard’s triple killed the jack during the eighth
end and took one shot after it was replayed, their opponents remained in the
lead at 10 shots-3. G Nobb’s
triple won the remaining ends to win the title by 13 shots-3.

Harwood. After five ends the Tovil four were 7 shots -3 up and
although the Tunbury four pulled back to 7 shots -9 down after eight ends,
Tovil held on to win through to the final by 10 shots -7.
The
second semi final was between Scott Freeman, Andrew Player, Trevor Burt and Lee
Freeman, Stone-In-Oxney SMBC, and Maureen Richards, Jean Desmond, Terry Desmond
and Peter Richards, Hempstead Valley SMBC. The Hempstead Valley four never got
going during the match and whilst in touch after four ends at 2 shots -5 down
were never able to close the gap further. The Stone four, last year’s losing
finalists, kept a firm grip of the game winning by 13 shots -3.
In
the final the Tovil four got of to a flying start and were 10 shots -0 up after
two ends. From then on the Stone four tried hard to catch up but after seven
ends were still behind at 7 shots -14. During the eighth end when trying to
kill the end Stone gave away 2 shots and the Tovil four went onto win the title
by 17 shots -7.

On Sunday 11th September a delayed 2010/2011 Club Championship took place in Snodland Village Hall. Teams from Snodland, Whiteoak, Leysdown, Ditton, Langley, Hollingbourne, Tunstall and Hempstead Valley battled out an excellent day of bowling.
As the event reached its climax 4 teams and 3 clubs were in the running to win and by chance were all playing each other in the last round of games.
The first clash was between Langley and Snodland “B”. Langley, Bob Whiting, Gwen & Neil Norris, began their last game with 13 points and 36 shots and Snodland “B”, Margaret Waghorn, Joan Tree and Brian Holman, started the game with 12 points and 14 shots. As was expected it was tight all the way with the score being 7-7 with one end to play; Snodland took advantage of their home venue and snuck a single shot.
The second clash was between Hempstead Valley & Snodland “A”. Hempstead Valley, Pam Horan, Pat Grant and Jean Jones, started the game with 13 points and 17 shots and Snodland “A”, Mark Woodger, Margaret & Ron Champion, started the game with 15 points and 19 shots. As with the previous result the game was tight with both teams having chances to win, however like the above game the home team took full advantage and secured a 2 shot victory.
This meant that the 2010/11 Club Championship was won as follows:-
Snodland “A” - 18 points & +21 shots – undefeated.
Snodland “B” - 15 points & +15 shots
Langley - 13 points & +35 shots
Hempstead Valley - 13 points & 15 shots
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the bowlers for
taking part and making the day such an enjoyable event, Snodland for
hosting us once again, Alfie Spelman for umpiring and our competition secretary
Sonia Watson for organising all the paperwork despite not being able to attend.
The winners and runners ups will be invited to the forthcoming
Presentation Day in Strood on October 2nd 2011.
Tim Rycraft.
