Burwash U18’s Singles Competition – Sun 25 Nov 07

Kent had three entrants into this competition this year; Christopher Wood, Teynham SMBC, Christopher Philpott, Balfour SMBC and Edward Selleck, Kemsing SMBC. There were a total of fourteen entrants from areas including Surrey, Kent, West Sussex and East Sussex.

The entrants were drawn into three groups and this year, the Kent players were drawn onto different mats.

Christopher Wood was in a group of 4; his match scores were as follows;

Won   13 - 5

Won   22 - 2

Won   19 -5

This put him through to the quarter finals.

Christopher Philpott was in a group of five; his match scores were as follows;

Won   8 - 7

Won   7 - 5

Lost   6 - 11

Won   10 – 8

This was also enough to put him through to the quarterfinals.

Edward Selleck’s was also in a group of five; his four match scores were;

Lost   7 - 13

Lost   2 - 16

Drew   7 - 7

Lost   6 – 9

The standard of bowling was exceptionally high and Edward should be proud of the way he performed on the day, especially as he has only been playing for approximately three months. He is a promising young bowler who could do very well in the future; well done.

The quarter finals saw Christopher Wood up against last year’s competition winner. After a very good game Christopher was unfortunately beaten 7 shots to 10. This is the last year that both Christopher Wood and his opponent will be able to play in the competition as they both turn 18 in the New Year.

Christopher Philpott was able to beat his opponent in the quarter finals, another promising young bowler from Surrey. The match score was 17 shots to 1. This put Chris into the semi-finals, but with the opposing competition getting stronger each round could Chris go any further?

Unfortunately, this year Chris was knocked out in the semi-finals, but it was a very close game with some extremely good bowling from both players. The score was 8 shots to 9.

The final saw last years and many other previous years, winner take first place again, winning 13 shots to 4.

Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to the organisers for making the day so enjoyable.

Next year will see a new face lift the winner’s trophy; hopefully they will be wearing a Kent shirt!
